Hearing, communication and education are basic rights, yet for many children in Sudan they are out of reach. Through its medical missions, SALAMAT Medical Charity UK has made hearing care and support for children with special needs central pillars of its work.
Giving the gift of hearing
During recent missions, SALAMAT’s audiology teams have helped hundreds of children and adults who were labelled as “deaf” to hear again.
- In one mission alone, SALAMAT donated 300 hearing aids
- Hearing was restored for approximately 300 individuals, mainly children
- Batteries for one full year were provided with each device, so children can use their hearing aids without interruption
Each hearing aid costs SALAMAT around $20, yet the impact is life-changing.
These children can now:
- Return to school
- Communicate with their siblings and parents
- Interact with friends and neighbours
- Reconnect with their communities
One young girl had tried for years to obtain a single hearing aid without success. During a SALAMAT mission, she was fitted with two hearing aids. The smile on her face told the whole story.
Clear information for families
For the first time, SALAMAT produced a leaflet in simple language explaining:
- How to use and care for a hearing aid
- How to check that it is working
- When to seek help if there are problems
Families also receive a follow-up card to help monitor progress and plan future reviews.
Children with learning difficulties and special needs
SALAMAT’s team for children with learning difficulties and special needs is now a well-established part of every major mission. The team:
- Assesses and supports children with developmental, learning and behavioural difficulties
- Trains teachers, carers and health workers to better understand these children’s needs
- Offers practical advice and emotional support to families
- Works with local authorities to help establish centres and schools for children with special needs
Across missions, many children and families have benefited from this service. SALAMAT’s approach is not just to “see” children once, but to build sustainable services, raise awareness and leave behind trained local staff.
