Behind every successful medical convoy there is careful planning, strong governance and committed leadership. Over the past few years, SALAMAT Medical Charity UK has invested heavily in building partnerships and strengthening its organisational foundations.
Working with the Sudan Medical Council
Senior SALAMAT leaders, including the President and Trustees, met with Professor Abdel Azim Mohamed Kabalo, President of the Sudan Medical Council, in Khartoum to agree on how to register foreign doctors participating in SALAMAT missions. The two sides discussed:
- Requirements for licensing and registration
- Responsibilities and expectations for both SALAMAT and the Council
- The importance of maintaining professional standards and patient safety

Professor Kablo showed great understanding and appreciation for SALAMAT’s work and promised to provide all possible facilitation. A Memorandum of Understanding is being prepared to formalise this collaboration.
Engagement with the British Embassy
SALAMAT also met with the British Ambassador in Khartoum and the Embassy’s Humanitarian Officer. The charity will maintain strong ties with the British Embassy to:
- Coordinate humanitarian efforts
- Share information on needs and priorities
- Facilitate the involvement of British-based health professionals in future missions

Collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education
A further meeting was held with the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Discussions covered:
- Opportunities for medical education and training
- Joint academic initiatives
- Ways to support Sudanese universities and teaching hospitals through visiting experts and online collaborations
Leadership and governance
SALAMAT’s recent progress is closely linked to the efforts of its Executive Committee and Board of Trustees. Over the last period, leaders have worked tirelessly to strengthen governance, improve transparency and ensure compliance with UK charity regulations. The leadership has focused on protecting and securing SALAMAT’s status in both the UK and Sudan, so that future missions can continue uninterrupted
As a result, SALAMAT has been able to “move ahead and forward”, delivering some of the best missions in its history, including the Kadugli and Marawi convoys, with timely medical reports, feedback and recommendations completed at the end of each mission.
A message of thanks
SALAMAT extends heartfelt thanks to:
- All volunteers and supporters in Sudan, the UK and around the world
- Partner institutions and government bodies
- Community members who welcome and host SALAMAT teams
Effective and efficient leadership, combined with genuine partnership, has been key to SALAMAT’s success so far – and will remain essential as the charity faces new challenges and opportunities in the future.
