Beyond the Clinics: Exploring Sudan’s Ancient Heritage with SALAMAT Volunteers

SALAMAT missions are not only about clinics and operating theatres. They are also an opportunity for volunteers to discover Sudan’s rich history and culture, build friendships and return home with a deeper connection to the country they serve.

Jebel Barkal – ancient capital of Nubia

During the Marawi mission, SALAMAT volunteers visited Jebel Barkal (جبل البركل), an iconic mountain and archaeological site in Northern Sudan. This area, dating back 2,000–4,000 BC, was once a major centre of the ancient Nubian and Egyptian civilisations.

Volunteers were able to:

  • Climb the mountain and see the surrounding desert and Nile valley
  • Explore temples and archaeological remains
  • Reflect on Sudan’s deep historical roots and cultural heritage

Many described it as a must-visit site, and an unforgettable experience.

Alkasinjar Islands – beauty along the Nile

The team also made a tourism visit to the Alkasinjar islands (جزر الكاسنجر) in the Nile near the fourth cataract. This archipelago of around 90 islands offers:

  • Breathtaking views of the Nile
  • Traditional villages and local hospitality
  • A peaceful environment away from the pressures of clinical work

For many volunteers, this was their first time hearing about Alkasinjar, and they left with a firm conviction:

“Trust SALAMAT – visit this part of Sudan. You will never regret it or be disappointed.”

Why this matters

These cultural visits are not a luxury; they are an important part of SALAMAT’s philosophy:

  • Recognising volunteers – after long, intense days in clinics and theatres, time for rest, reflection and appreciation is vital.
  • Strengthening teams – shared experiences outside the hospital build trust and friendship between volunteers from different countries and specialties.
  • Honouring Sudanese heritage – missions are hosted by local communities; understanding their history and culture deepens mutual respect.

By combining high-quality medical work with cultural exchange, SALAMAT’s missions leave a deeper, more lasting impression on everyone involved – volunteers, partners and communities alike.
