Our Story
SALAMAT CIO Charity grew out of a volunteer movement of medical professionals who have travelled to Sudan for many years to deliver humanitarian care and medical training.
Since 2004, our volunteers have travelled to different parts of Sudan to treat patients, conduct medical training workshops, deliver lectures to medical students, and train nurses and midwives. When earlier funding ended, the group made a clear choice: do we stop, or continue? Our founders chose to continue — and SALAMAT CIO Charity was formally established as a registered charity in the UK in April 2010, then registered in Sudan in February 2013.
Today, SALAMAT CIO Charity continues regular visits to Sudan (twice per year), working with local partners to reach communities with limited access to specialist care and to strengthen the health workforce through training, education, and sustainable service development.

Our Mission
Relieve sickness
and protect health among people in Sudan
Advance medical education
in Sudan, so that local teams are better equipped to care for their patients.
In simple terms, we aim to reach people who would otherwise have little or no access to high-quality medical care, while helping to build a stronger, more skilled health workforce for the future.
Our Vision
Our vision is to engage Sudanese British communities, their networks, and UK-based organisations in charitable giving and sustainable capacity-building initiatives that strengthen healthcare in Sudan.
Our Visions for the Near Future
Building on over 16 years of field experience, SALAMAT is considering a model that expands our work through multiple directorates, as well as increasing the number of convoys to four medical convoys per year, allowing more volunteers to join at times of year that suit them best.
This approach would support smaller, more flexible teams that can contribute across a wider range of initiatives, including medical services, surgery, training, education, and community development.
Proposed Directorates
We are considering operating under several directorates, including medical, surgical, eye and ear, haematology and oncology, obstetrics and midwifery, orthopaedics and acute medicine, medical and nursing education, and community development, among many others.
Each directorate would be led by a small number of SALAMAT executives and trustees to oversee specific projects and initiatives, and to open the door to wider collaboration.
What We Do
Missions and Convoys
We organise medical convoys and missions across Sudan, bringing multidisciplinary teams to areas with limited specialist services.
Equipment and Supplies
We support local hospitals and services through the donation of medical equipment, supplies and disposables; to help cover urgent needs.
Partnerships and Delivery
We work with local authorities, hospitals, universities, civil society organisations, and the Secretariat of Sudanese Working Abroad (SSWA), among others.
Our approach: sustainability, not one-off missions
Clinics and surgeries can provide immediate benefit – but they are limited unless they lead to long-term change. That’s why SALAMAT focuses on sustainability alongside direct medical care.

Deliver direct care
We provide clinics, procedures and operations for patients who need them most.

Mobilise community support and partnerships
We collaborate with communities and institutions to improve access, solve practical barriers, and make impact last beyond each mission.

Sudanese and wider UK society
Many volunteers cover their own travel when joining convoys and missions.
SALAMAT also works with partners to support logistics and enable specialist participation where needed, so that convoys can deliver both direct care and lasting knowledge transfer.
Our Impact
Since 2009, SALAMAT has organised over 33 medical and training convoys, reaching 25 cities and villages across 18 states in Sudan (as of October 2025).
